Ford Mustang GT
Ford mustang gt is back. The 5.0 is back! The 2011 Ford Mustang GT comes with an advanced new 5.0-liter V-8 engine, developed by a group of engineers passionate enthusiasts who gathered around the common goal of delivering over 400 horsepower.
The modern 5.0-liter four-valve double overhead camshaft variable timing independent (Ti-VCT) V-8 engine in the new Ford Mustang GT will offer 412 horsepower and 390 ft.-lb. of torque. At the same time, fuel economy is designed to be better than the previous model and unmatched in the segment.
"This new 5.0-liter is the next chapter in the development of world-class portfolio Mustang powertrain," said Derrick Ku
Coyote in the lobby
Many of the engineers of the development team has worked in the motor and the Electrical Engineering building at Dearborn, Mich., campus center of product development. For years I passed in front of the original 5.0-liter V-8 engine Coyote Indy races on display in the lobby, constantly inspired by its mix of legacy, high technology and power.
The development community transmission had long wanted to develop a new 5.0-liter powertrain with strategic discussions since 2000. By 2007, the competitive landscape Mustang was beginning to change, a sign that the time was right to advance the Ford Mustang GT powertrain global levels.

The team began developing the 5.0-liter engine, with the aim of delivering over 400 horsepower, an accelerated timetable for 12 months without compromising reliability, durability, fuel economy, or noise, vibration and harshness ( NVH) control.
"Almost all team members have worked on other programs broadcast high-profile", said V-8 Program Manager Mike Harrison. "Everyone had a clear vision of the work required for their particular component or subsystem. Their passion for cars, racing and delivering the last drop of performance throughout the speed range of the engine actually shows that they put the head and heart in this transmission. "
Development and testing of engines including 5.0-liter benchmark blocks, using different bore and stroke measurements, GT500 four valves per cylinder heads and intake cam rider many different configurations, different compression ratios and a deep sump oil pan. The team also evaluated Ford Racing 5.0-liter "Cammer" crate engine V-8 for best practices transferable.
Extensive computer-aided engineering (CAE) modeling, engine development and testing of evaluation in combination with the machine brought this promising intricate, stunning all-new configuration for life in a short time.
The result of this development is an "e" solution, not an "o". 2011 Mustang buyers will enjoy the benefits of a powerful engine and responsible consumption.
Ti-VCT
A critical element of the 5.0-liter V-8 is the ability to deliver 412 horsepower, with better driveability, maneuverability and fuel economy than the Ford Mustang 2010 GT powertrain is enriched Ti-VCT.
For an application of high performance, the team has specified cam-couple-actuated variable camshaft timing. Energy using existing torque camshaft, with the assistance of oil under pressure, has resulted in upgrades to a minimum the oil pump were required, resulting in less parasitic drag. Increased thermal and volumetric efficiency provides faster response to all Ti-VCT schemes.
During the development phase, the profile of the cam lift and optimization door is started with multiple units of Ford cars racing aftermarket, modified for compatibility with various four valves per cylinder heads. Wide CAE and the test was conducted to develop events camshaft and the flow of port performance and fuel efficiency in collaboration with the variable valve timing.
The resulting all-new aluminum four-valve per cylinder heads are equipped with a compact roller finger follower valvetrain leaving more space available to free-breathing high-flow ports for performance. Head structure is designed to support higher pressures of the cylinder head and cooling cross-flow to support high-rpm use. Bolt head size was increased from 11-12 mm to hold the higher combustion pressures.
The aluminum block has been developed and optimized shunt losses for the oil side and high rpm conditions, such as a track day trip for an owner and enthusiast drivers. Increasing the width of the main bulkhead and spherical bearing cross-bolted main bearing caps bolted upsizing were also used to accommodate the significant increase in performance.
Another factor is the increased capacity and baffling of oil pan deep sump stamped steel to allow sustained high speeds and offer the convenience of using intervals of 10,000 miles of oil change. Piston cooling jets have also been included for performance-minded customers and for faster warm oil on cold start-ups.
Specially designed tubular exhaust manifolds have been developed to maximize the separation of the exhaust pulse and increase flow. An analyst team indeed Tubular headers manufactured in his workshop at home, bringing to life the design CAE.
Ford mustang GT Performance and Economy
The 412 horsepower and 390 ft.-lb. of torque delivered from 2011 Mustang GT 5.0-liter V-8 represents a significant increase compared to 2010 years of the outgoing model.
The six-speed automatic gearbox on the 2011 Ford Mustang GT will deliver up to about 25 mpg in the city and 17 highway. This is the mpg highway 23 and 17 cities for the 2010 model. Six-speed manual transmission models of Ford Mustang GT for 2011 is expected to deliver 24 mpg city and 16 highway, matching the 2010 model, but provide significantly more power and feel the performance.
2011 Ford Mustang GT fuel consumption is enabled by the Ti-VCT, six-speed automatic or manual changes, and an additional rear seal EPAS decklid to improve aerodynamics.
Fuel economy is also helped by a lightweight powertrain engineering. The engine, as delivered, weighs only 430 pounds. This represents a weight saving of more than 20 percent over the previous 5.0-liter offers. Lower mass can be attributed to the block and aluminum heads, lightweight composite intake manifold, cam covers, and composite camshafts cables.
Better driving dynamics
EPAS has contributed dramatically to Ford Mustang GT driving dynamics, delivering faster in the center of the steering response, the greater effort at highway speeds and reduced the effort required at low speed parking maneuvers. EPAS allows you to set up application-specific Ford Mustang GT.
The 2011 Ford Mustang GT has a higher rear lower control arm to add rigidity and improve the control of the powertrain NVH and improve handling. A rigid rear stabilizer bar to improve the center column is also included. Diameter stabilizer bar, springs and dampers have all been tuned to improve the dynamics.
A Brembo brake upgrade package will be available for serious enthusiasts. This package includes 14-inch ventilated front discs Mustang GT500, unique 19-inch wheels and summer performance tires.
Convenience added content
For 2011 Ford Mustang GT offers a variety of new technologies, cost drivers, including:
Message Center Standard
Integrated blind spot mirrors
MyKey ™ programmable vehicle key
Illuminated Visors
Universal garage door opener
Parasol storage
New look
From 5.0 fender badges new engine cover, Ford Mustang GT honors and continues the glorious tradition of his predecessors. The increases to 160 mph speedometer and tachometer redline progress from 6,500 to 7,000 rpm.
Three bright colors will be added for 2011 including new Yellow Blaze Tri-Coat, Race Red, Silver Lingotto.
Improved rigidity and NVH control Convertible
For 2011 Ford Mustang GT benefits from all-the-board improvements in NVH.These include additional sound-absorbing material on both sides of the bridge, an additional seal between the door and rocker panel to reduce wind noise and a real wheel cover to reduce noise on gravel or wet surfaces.
Ford Mustang GT Convertible models feature increased structural rigidity, with better lateral rigidity by 12 percent compared to 2010 model. A tower to tower reinforcement pillar is now standard, and the V-brace has been stiffened by the addition of reinforcements. The secondary beam has also been stiffened, while a positive Z-brace was added, linking primary and secondary beams. A-pillar foam stiffness was also added to increase rigidity.
"This Heritage honors Mustang engine raising the bar of performance, increasing fuel economy," said Barb Samardzich, vice president, Powertrain Development. "For the fans, as passionate members 5.0-liter V-8 team is like having your cake and eat it, too."
